2015 Tesla Motors Model S p85 d came in for paint correction and auto detailing here in New Milford, Ct. One of the worst ones I have come across. Major road rash and wash scratches. In only a few short months, the New England weather took a major toll on the paint. Pretty much each panel was taken individually and brought back to a better than new condition.Ceramic Pro Americas Gold Package applied and Black Pearl Trim & Tire Armour to finish off the look.
This is a written version of The Cheeseburger Theory podcast I did with Jimbo Balaam. To listen, please check below.
I know what a lot of you are thinking, what do cheese-burgers have to do with Auto Detailing. Well, for one thing, I love a good cheeseburger. In fact, if I had to choose between a steak cooked by the top chef in the country versus a bacon cheeseburger cooked by the top chef in the country, I would probably choose the cheeseburger. Nothing makes me feel happier than a well prepared, loaded with onions, bacon, tomatoes, and horseradish mustard burger on a fresh baked bun that is partially soaked. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Throw in a nice dark lager to wash it down with, and I am in food coma heaven.
The other thing, is what I like to refer to as “The Cheeseburger Theory”. The theory goes like this: I can walk into a local Burger King or McDonalds and say “I would like the cheeseburger. It will probably cost around a dollar, give or take, and it will be ready within a few minute. On the other hand, I could walk into the top steakhouse in New York City, and order a Cheese Burger, and it will probably cost anywhere from $40 to upwards of $100 . I have done my research, and there is even a restaurant in London that sells a Cheeseburger for $1768. (Don’t believe me? Check out THIS ARTICLE.) The point is, at either place, I am basically saying the same thing, “I would like a cheeseburger”.
From here, there are some obvious differences in the final product that I receive. Let’s talk about the fast food burger first. I have to walk in, or go through a drive through. The person taking my order usually looks “half asleep” to say the least. I get it served to me on a plastic tray, wrapped in wax paper and I am CERTAINLY not getting my dark lager to wash my meal down with. I go sit down at a linoleum table on a plastic bench that are both usually bolted down to the ground. No one asks me about how my meal is, if I want my drink refilled, and there is certainly nothing relaxing about the environment. This is about the atmosphere that my meal is served to me.
Now, onto the actual cheeseburger itself. It’s prepared in a microwave with no skill involved. They are certainly not asking me how I want my burger cooked. If you start really doing your homework, you will certainly question if you are getting real meat, cheese, bacon, and other “food”. As a long time detailer, I have pulled out these “pieces of cheese, meat patty, and bacon strip” that certainly should have started to decay, but instead look like they belong in my daughter’s play food kitchen because they look the exact same way they did the day they were purchased.
Overall, it’s a quick service, provided by people with little to no skill, a questionable end result that may temporarily make you feel good, but long term, you feel like crap. However, keep in mind, you still said; “I would like a cheeseburger”
Now, let’s talk about the burger that costs $40-$75 range. First off, we’ll talk about the environment. You are probably lead to your (comfortable) seat and told that there is a delicious “cheeseburger” special today. There is real, metal silverware on the table, cloth napkins, and probably music playing in the background. Overall, if they are going to pull off an offering for a $75 cheeseburger, they had better make it a true experience for me. I am asked how I would like my cheeseburger cooked, what freshly prepared side I would like, and most importantly, what fresh, on tap, dark lager I would like to start my meal with.
On top of the environment I am being served in, who is preparing me this magnificent burger? Probably someone who has had extensive culinary training or at least the preparation is being overseen by someone like this. The ground beef is top of the line kobe beef, I usually have my choice of cheese (Swiss cheese or Monterey Jack are my personal favorites), and it’s perfectly melted. The onions are sautéed before being put on, the bacon is cooked to crispy perfection. All of this is being done with top of the line restaurant equipment that is kept clean and in top working order so that meal after meal, the chef and his team can deliver the best results to any and all customers who come through their door.
So, what does this have to do with auto detailing? I am glad you asked. Just like no one is out there saying EXACTLY what a cheeseburger has to be, even though there should be, no one is out there saying what EXACTLY your customers mean when they say “I want my car detailed”. On any given day, it can mean a run though a car wash and a coat of wax all the way up to a full 50 hour or more paint correction and coating. To the professionals, we know what it means, but I am asking you to look through your client’s eyes. How can you explain to someone what the difference is between YOUR detailing service and the guy down the road to the general population that is still confused as to what exactly happens when you clay their car.
Well, a good start would be to take a look at the environment your clients immediately walk into? Does it scream “Unprofessional, untrained, over processed service”, or does it give your potential client a feeling of exclusivity. Are you wax paper and linoleum chairs or are you dedicated servers and real silverware. Are you trained in what you are doing, can you prove it? Do you use the best equipment and products and keep them clean and well kept, or are you using whatever was the cheapest when you walked into Walmart? Are you showing your customer from the get go that you are the $75 dollar cheeseburger or are you showing them you are the $1 cheeseburger TRYING to be the $75.
Another part of my cheeseburger theory should also mentally work in your favor. If a potential client walked into the New York Steakhouse and demanded they cook him the $75 burger for only $1 because “McDonald’s down the road serves it for a dollar” they would probably laugh at them and ask them to leave. I am not encouraging you to laugh at your clients, but you need to show them why it’s impossible for you to do the same work down the road because it’s not the work you do, plain and simple.
Now, if you will excuse me, I am starving. I think I’ll go have a cheeseburger.

It’s that time of year again here in Connecticut. The snow is on the ground, and that means the salt, ice melting brine and all sorts of other mean and nasty things are on the roads ready to wreck havoc on your cars, trucks and SUV’s. The car gurus at Road and Track magazine share their thoughts not only on the value of having your car professionally detailed, but talk about having a Ceramic Coating installed as well for some REAL protections from the Connecticut D.O.T.
Arkham Shine Auto Detailing Studio is proud to announce that we are one of the first auto detailing studios in the country to offer Simoniz’s new ceramic coating and warranty program, “Simoniz Diamond Plate“.
When it comes to the car detailing industry, there is probably one phrase that is said over and over again:
“I want my car Simonized”
For a long time, this had a very vague meaning outside of the dealerships. If you picked your car up from a dealership, you could get a product called “Simoniz GlassCoat*” installed on your new car and you could benefit from anywhere from a 5 year to a lifetime warranty, and an easy to care for surface. (if the GlassCoat was installed properly or at all). GlassCoat is designed as a “Dealership Only” program, and therefore small, independent detail studios were unable to offer this product.
With the recent emergence of the coating industry, Simoniz has reworked the formula for their “GlassCoat” and come up with a product not only designed for new cars, but used cars as well.
What is Diamond Plate?
- Simoniz Diamond Plate is a nano-ceramic polymer paint coating that is designed to improve the gloss and depth of our clients paint as well as give the vehicle a level of REAL long term protection
- Diamond Plate‘s polysilazane coating is held together by silicon-oxygen bonds. These bonds are unaffected by ultraviolet rays.
- Polysilazane itself strongly reacts with the hydroxyl groups on the paint surface to form a chemical bond in it at millions of separate points across the surface.
- The Simoniz Diamond Plate program includes a 2 Year, hassle free warranty with one of America’s most well know insurance agency’s.
- Installation also includes Simoniz VisionBlade. VisionBlade is a windshield coating that acts like Rain-X on steroids.
What does Diamond Plate protect against?
- Acid rain and hard water spot etching
- Bird droppings
- Tree sap
- Insects including Love Bugs (for you Floridians)
- Aerosol and Graffiti spray paint
- Accidental paint over spray or sling up from newly painted road lines.
- Loss of gloss from fading or chalking due to exposure to the sun
- Damage caused by Road De-icing material
How does you file a claim?
Clients who purchase the Simoniz Diamond Plate system can easily file a claim on the Simoniz GlassCoat app available from The Apple Store or Google Play, or they can simply file a claim by visiting the SIMONIZ WEBSITE
* PLEASE NOTE: if you had an independent car detailer sell you a Simoniz Glasscoat, it was illegal and the warranty given will not be honored should anything happen to your car. Simoniz GlassCoat is a Dealership Only product and can not legally be installed outside a dealership.

Ceramic Pro Connecticut
Introducing the most advanced coating system for the automotive industry.
Ceramic Pro Ct is the new face of coating technology. Ceramic Pro is a multi-layered, clear, liquid nano coating. When cured, this advance technology transforms itself on the surface to a permanent, ceramic shield. Ceramic Pro can be described best as an additional layer of Clear Coat, with 3 times the hardness and self cleaning properties.
Why YOU should get Ceramic Pro installed on your vehicles.
First of all, it’s a great investment. The Ceramic Pro coating system will protect your vehicle’s exterior and interior from deteriorating for the life of the car. This makes the time you have the car more enjoyable and helps maintain the resale market value should you decide to get rid of the vehicle.
Your car will look new all the time! Once the coating is applied, you will see an unbelievable level of gloss, mirror effect and color depth above and beyond what traditional waxes and paint sealants can give. The best part is that with very easy, proper maintenance, your car will shine for YEARS to come.
Less maintenance. The slickness of the coated surface does not allow dirt, brake dust, tar, bird droppings or other environmental and industrial contaminants to stick to your car’s paint, rims and glass. This makes washing and maintaining you vehicle significantly less labor intensive and much less necessary.
How is this possible? Once the Ceramic Pro has cured, it is measured to have a hardness of over 9h. Normal clear coat only has a hardness of 2h-4h due to environmental restrictions and manufacturers desire to make the vehicle as cheaply as possible. The 9h ceramic shield helps to prevent minor and major damage to your clearcoat by acting as a much more durable, sacrificial layer. Any surface scratches that happen to the coating are easily removed with minimal polishing which will not weaken the integrity of your original clearcoat. Also, with Ceramic Pro, your paint system will not fade or age due to the UV protection in the ceramic coating.
Ceramic Pro is a one time application if maintained correctly. Once the Ceramic Pro coating system has cured, it can only be removed through abrasions like wet sanding or heavy compounding. This level of extreme protection puts Ceramic Pro in a category by itself when compared to traditional waxes and paint sealants which degrade quickly.
Ceramic Pro also offers a warranty on the ceramic coating of your vehicle. They are sure that you will be extremely satisfied with the Ceramic Pro paint coating system. The extensive warranty covers damage to the clear coat due to most environmental and industrial occurrences.

GTechniq: Smart Surface Science
“Stop Waxing, Start Perfecting”
THE GTECHNIQ STORY
GTechniq was born of pure science, a love of cars, and the desire to create the best car care products with a focus on protective coatings. Long term, durable protective coatings are the cornerstone of GTechniq’s success.
In 2004, the scientists at GTechniq created a superior line of products aimed at perfecting all the surfaces of your vehicle. The result is a revolutionary line of surface protection for the broadest range of your vehicle’s exterior. GTechniq protects your car in a way that no traditional wax or paint sealants can match. The engineers and scientists at GTechniq tackle to toughest car care challenges and have introduced a line of products that not only outlast, but outshine the competition.
“WOW, how did you do that?” is a very common reaction that we hear whenever someone experiences the result of a car that has been protected using the GTechniq product line. It’s called SMART SURFACE SCIENCE and it combines micro-abrasive finishing technology to get your paint system perfect and then protects the surface with unique bonding elements that actually forms a chemical bond with the surface of your vehicle. With GTechniq, wax is obsolete and replaced with a crystal coated shine. The result is a final product that not only looks almost unreal, but makes maintaining a better than showroom shine as easy as rinsing the surface.
Once your car has been through our extensive Paint Correction and Car Detailing process, the paint is prepped to ensure proper bonding. Once applied, GTechniq will dramatically reduce surface damage from:
- hard water spotting and acid rain etching
- bird bombs (bird droppings)
- tree sap
- insects, including Love Bugs (plecia nearctia)
- spray paint
- damage caused by extended exposure to the sun such as fading, chalking, loss of gloss and clear coat failure.
- all road de-icing material (EXTREMELY important here in New England)
Let’s not forget about the interior of your vehicle as well. We believe that Interior Detailing and protection is just as important. Once your interior has been completely detailed with our systematic and complete interior detailing process, we can protect the fabric, vinyl, leather, and plastic against;
- ultraviolet induced fading
- cracking and loose seam stitching in the leather
- permanent interior staining caused by food, drink, inks, dyes or whatever else may try to ruin your interior
- ultraviolet induced weakening of the vinyl or leather that can result in punctures and tears.
I am proud to announce that I will be prepping and detailing cars for the inaugural Northeast Barrett Jackson Auction June 19th through June 25th, 2016

With all the attention paid to the exterior paint on cars, the interior, where you spend A LOT of time, is sometimes neglected. While a few crumbs, some dust, and that mysterious Fast Food French Fry that makes it’s way into EVERY car is unsightly, it can also lead to a very unhealthy environment for you and your family. Read more below.
As Americans spend more time behind the wheel, they may be unknowingly acting as a chauffeur to a menagerie of invisible passengers. Millions of germs and fungi, including bacteria and mold, are probably hitching a ride in your hatchback.
There’s no question one of the main reasons a car gathers germs is because few people clean the interiors well or disinfect them.
In some ways, cars are temporary living spaces that we often overlook as a place where microorganisms can grow and thrive.
In a recent British study done for insurance.co.uk, microbiologists randomly tested both the interiors and trunks of 25 cars. They found that the typical British automobile had, on average, 285 types of bacteria present in every square inch of the vehicle. They identified at least 10 major types of bacteria.
Anthony Hilton, a microbiologist from Ashton University who led the study, believed steering wheels would house the most germs. However, stick shifts — with 356 germs per square inch — did worse, likely because they have a smaller surface area that concentrates the bugs.
And the nastiest harbor for bacterial refugees — the carpet of the trunk, where scientists found 300 to 400 bacteria per square inch.
Most of the bacteria in cars came from dead skin cells and soil tracked in on shoes, hands or animal paws. People generally don’t get infected by these pathogens. (Although one car that was swabbed for the study contained microbes linked to fecal contamination.)
“Our study found organisms in a car that are not uncommon to be found around a toilet,” said Hilton. “If someone gave you some food to eat while you were sitting on the toilet, you would be repulsed.”
Yet, plenty of people think nothing of nibbling in their vehicles.
Microbes also enter through the air and heating vents, although that’s beginning to change. Newer models in the United Kingdom have more sophisticated ventilation systems, along with pollen or bacteriological filters, to prevent airborne particles from getting in, Hilton explained.
Putting U.S. Cars to the Test
Compared to British cars, American cars aren’t much cleaner. In 2006, microbiologist Charles Gerba of the University of Arizona and a colleague did a larger study.
They swabbed the interiors of 100 automobiles in five locations: Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois and Washington, D.C. They took samples from 11 different areas in each car. And the scientists noted whether the driver was male or female, single or married.
When they looked at the results, the cleanest car belonged to a bachelor from Arizona. The dirtiest was driven by a married woman from Florida.
Not surprisingly, vans and SUVs contained more bacteria than smaller models, and married people had germier vehicles than singles.
The four top spots for germs were dashboards — which ranked first — followed by change holders, cup holders and children’s car seats. These beat out other frequently touched areas such as door handles, window openers and seat belts.
Gerba found evidence that bacteria can grow in food spills and suspects the dashboard was the most germ-laden location, because it’s one of the warmest places in the car and has ventilation systems on either side that can aerate spores.
Whether a car is teeming with germs also depends on where you live. Climates that are warmer and more humid like Florida produce more bacteria, because the car’s interior acts like a sauna, while Chicago’s cold and damp conditions mimic refrigeration inside an automobile and encourage the growth of mold.
Gerba has also done similar studies on planes and buses, and found that cars were the moldiest of all forms of transportation, probably because their interiors get cleaned less frequently. If you’re sensitive to mold, your car might trigger an allergic reaction, especially in colder climates.
Driving Away Germs
While the exterior looks of your car might be of primary importance, experts advise you not overlook the inside and clean it as regularly as you would the outside.
Today’s car has become more of an extension of the domestic environment — where people eat and drink and talk on the phone. It’s like a room of your house on wheels, said Hilton. Just imagine what a microbiologist might find in your dining room should you choose to foresake cleaning it for a time.
You’ll want to periodically clean and wipe the surfaces and mats, especially after food or beverages spill, as well as vacuum the rugs and seats where crumbs and debris can settle. You also need to be more vigilant if your pet regularly joins you for a ride.
“I don’t want people to freak out and throw bleach in their cars,” said Hilton.
But Gerba takes a stronger stance. He recommends using disinfecting wipes on the dashboard, door handles and kids’ car seats, especially if you’re transporting lots of children or have a carpool.
It’s highly unlikely that the microbes in the average car will make you sick, but under atypical circumstances, they can, pointed out Philip Tierno, a microbiology professor at New York University and author of “The Secret Life of Germs.”
The real risk is driving with more passengers in the car, particularly younger ones, which increases the odds of more people sneezing and coughing, leaving a trail of germs behind that you might touch to your nose, mouth or eyes, leading to a cold or flu.
“Children are little bags of germs and if you cart them around, they have more potential pathogens,” said Tierno.
Gerba put it another way, “If you’re a soccer mom, you’re essentially driving a germ-mobile.”

Welcome to Arkham Shine’s database of articles and information on various aspects of the auto detailing industry.
Over the years, I have been asked almost ever imaginable question about detailing. Some of the questions I have been asked are well thought out, and it was clear to me that the person did their research. Other times, however, people have asked me mind boggling questions about various detailing processes that just do not even abide by the laws of science, never mind even remotely describe what auto detailing entails.
The truth is that there is no governing “Auto Detailing” body in the United States or the world for that matter. What this means is that anyone can really go out and say anything without having to answer to someone if what they are saying is wrong. This lends to a lot of misinformation about any and all aspects of the auto detailing industry.
What is compiled here should at least give you a starting point as to where to go to get the proper information about what auto detailing is about. The articles below are ones that I have personally chosen and for the most part, are written by veterans of the industry that I have come to know and trust over the years.
I encourage you, if you are an existing client of mine already, or a potential client of mine, to read through these articles, and certainly write down any questions you have about the detailing process. Clients who ask me 1000 questions about my service always apologies, but it’s not necessary. An educated client is a happy client, and a more loyal client as well. I would rather you ask me all the questions you have before trusting me with your car, then have to explain things like “gravity” to you after the service has been complete. (Yes, I actually had to do this once).
So, enjoy the following articles, and I look forward to earning and continuing to do business with you.
